About the Shepherds Bush
Shepherds Bush is a district in West London in the Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham that is situated 4.9 miles (7.9 km) West of the Charing Cross. The Shepherds Bush is famous for its big shopping area of Shepherds Bush Green. In the Northern part there is the "Westfield shopping centre" which is the largest urban shopping centre in Europe. On the Southern side there is a smaller shopping centre "the West 12" with a supermarket, a cinema and a gym.
The main streets of Shepherds Bush in London are the Uxbridge Road, the Goldhawk Road and the Askew Road. They all contain a large number of small and mostly independent shops, pubs and restaurants. On the Loftus Road in Shepherds Bush there is the Queen's Park Rangers football club.
Shepherds Bush is bordered by the Hammersmith on the South/South-West side, by the Brook Green on the South/South-East side, by the Holland Park (and then Notting Hill) on the East, by the Willesden and the Harlesden on the Northern part and by the Acton and Chiswick on the Western side.
The Entertainment
The BBC
The BBC used to have many offices in Shepherds Bush, but most of them have now been closed or re-located. They included the Lime Grove Studios on the site of the previous film studios Gaumont and Gainsborough Pictures. The Sulgrave House, the Threshold and the Union Houses as well as the Kensington House became hotels or are available for rent. The BBC's presence in the Shepherds Bush is now concentrated in two huge sites on the Wood Lane, the Television Centre and the White City building.
The Media Village was recently built next to the White City building and is used by the BBC and other media companies including the Red Bee Media (formerly BBC Broadcast, now a private company). The Television Centre is the national home of the BBC Television and it is from there that the BBC TV and radio news, the BBC website and a host of TV drama and light entertainment are broadcasted.
The Bush Theatre
The Bush Theatre is one of the most celebrated theatres in the world. Situated on the Green it has an international reputation for discovering, nurturing and producing the best new theatre writers from the widest range of backgrounds and for presenting their work to the highest possible standards. The Bush Theatre is widely acclaimed as the seedbed for the best new playwrights, many of whom have gone on to become established names in the entertainment industry.
The Shepherds Bush Theatre built in 1901, was used by the BBC as a TV studio for many years for such shows as Wogan, That's Life!, Crackerjack, This is Your Life and others until 1991; it is now the Shepherds Bush Empire.
